The Downey Christian Patriots entered their tilt with the Southland Christian FLAMES with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Downey Christian walked away with a 74-66 victory over Southland Christian on Friday. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Downey Christian to victory, but perhaps none more so than Maylon Marte, who scored 27 points along with eight rebounds. Marte hasn't dropped below 15 points for nine straight games. Patrick Olajuwon was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Several FLAMES players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was JOMAR COLLAZO, who scored 17 points. Another player making a difference was Derek Lopez, who scored 18 points.
Downey Christian pushed their record up to 19-7 with that win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 83.5 points per game. As for Southland Christian, their loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 20-8.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Downey Christian will take on IMG Academy Gray at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Downey Christian knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past 12 matches -- so hopefully IMG Academy Gray likes a good challenge. As for Southland Christian, they will be playing at home against Vine Christian Academy at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. One thing working in Southland Christian's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last 17 contests.
