Maxwell and the Wildcats are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2019, but not for long. The Maxwell Wildcats will be playing at home against the Wallace Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.
Maxwell won a close one the last time they played, but unfortunately they suffered a serious change of fortune on Tuesday. They were the victim of a rough 53-28 loss at the hands of Perkins County. While losing is never fun, Maxwell can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 236th, while the Plainsmen are ranked 75th).
Levi Huffman put forth a good effort for the losing side as he scored 12 points.
Maxwell struggled to work together and finished the game with only an assist. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Wallace's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their fifth straight loss. They took a 55-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of Brady.
Despite their loss, Wallace saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Matt Lungrin, who scored 14 points along with six rebounds and three steals, was perhaps the best of all. The team also got some help courtesy of Colt Franklin, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds.
Maxwell's loss dropped their record down to 4-13. As for Wallace, they dropped their record down to 6-12 with that defeat, which was their fourth straight on the road.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Maxwell have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 24.6 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Wallace struggles in that department as they've been averaging 22.7 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Maxwell came out on top in a nail-biter against the Wildcats when the teams last played on Friday, sneaking past 36-33. Does Maxwell have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wildcats turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
