Baseball Recap: Muleshoe Has No Trouble Against Friona

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Idalou, Muleshoe was happy to have turned things around on Monday. They blew past the Friona Chieftans 14-3. The result was nothing new for the Mules, who have now won six matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Jake Villanueva made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Those four hits allowed gave him a new career-low. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 3-for-4. Muleshoe is undefeated when Villanueva posts two or more runs, but 5-9 otherwise.

In other batting news, Donovan Moreno and Nehemiah Sanchez did most of the damage at the plate: Moreno went 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base, while Sanchez went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. Moreno has become a key player for Muleshoe: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 6-9 otherwise. Ryan Dominguez was another key player, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Muleshoe was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. The last time their batting average was this high was back in February.

The win got Muleshoe back to even at 9-9. As for Friona, they dropped their record down to 2-14 with the loss, which was their fourth straight at home.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Muleshoe will square off against Roosevelt at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Muleshoe is facing Roosevelt at the right time seeing as Roosevelt is stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Friona, they will face off against Dimmitt at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
