Softball Recap: Velva/Drake/Anamoose Beats Hazen for Their Fifth Straight Win

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Velva/Drake/Anamoose). They put the hurt on the Hazen Bison with a sharp 24-0 victory on Thursday. The result was nothing new for the Aggies, who have now won four matches by eight runs or more so far this season.

Grace Balas made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Emma Balas was a standout: she got on base in all four of her plate appearances with six RBI, two stolen bases, and three runs. She also put up two doubles, which were her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Abigail Hudkins, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four stolen bases, four runs, and three RBI.

Velva/Drake/Anamoose always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .892. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hazen only posted an OBP of .000.

The win keeps Velva/Drake/Anamoose at an undefeated 5-0. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average this season. As for Hazen, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-5.
