Lapwai hasn't had much luck against Clearwater Valley recently, but that could start to change on Monday. Da Ron Wheeler was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he struck out 13 batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. Wheeler was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in five of his six plate appearances. Wheeler is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: he's snagged at least one every time he's taken the field this season.
In other batting news, Chase Brown made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. Meanwhile, Clearwater Valley came into Thursday's game having lost five straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They blew past Nezperce 23-9 on Thursday. The Rams might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five contests by six runs or more this season.
Tiago Pickering was a standout: he scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4. Clearwater Valley is undefeated when Pickering posts two or more stolen bases, but 1-6 otherwise. Cameron Whitcomb also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Clearwater Valley was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .469. The last time their batting average was this high was back in April of 2024.
Lapwai's defeat dropped their record down to 0-5. As for Clearwater Valley, the win got them back to even at 6-6.
Monday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Lapwai has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .494. However, it's not like Clearwater Valley struggles in that department as they've averaged .466. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Lapwai suffered a grim 12-3 defeat to Clearwater Valley when the teams last played back in March. Can the Wildcats avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
