After flying high against the Hidalgo Pirates last Friday, The La Feria Lions came back down to earth. La Feria ended up on the wrong side of a tough 31-7 walloping at the hands of Zapata on Friday. Having soared to a lofty 35 points in the game before, La Feria couldn't push the score so high this time.
Zapata got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Landon Martinez out in front who threw for 174 yards and three touchdowns, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Andres Gutierrez also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
La Feria's loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their overall record down to 2-7. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 6-1 Alice and 6-3 Calallen (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 63.1% over those games). As for Zapata, the win was the third in a row for they, bringing their record for this year to 6-2.
La Feria will be playing in front of their home fans against King at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Zapata, they will head out on the road to face off against Alice at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Alice is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
