The Maplewood Rockets will head out to take on the Grand Valley Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Maplewood is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.
Maplewood will head out to face Grand Valley after giving up their first home loss of the season on Saturday. The Rockets came up short against Geneva, falling 12-3. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Rockets, who until this matchup were averaging 2.62 runs allowed.
Claire Urchek made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
Grand Valley came out on top against Bloomfield on Wednesday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run sixth inning. The Mustangs were the clear victors by a 10-0 margin over the Cardinals. Ten seems to be a good number for the Mustangs as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Natilly Hostetler was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over six innings pitched. Hostetler was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with three runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Maddie Lowry-Stark, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs. Another player making a difference was Violet Morse, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
Grand Valley was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .419. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Grand Valley has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for Maplewood, their loss dropped their record down to 11-2.
Grand Valley's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Maplewood has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .475. It's a different story for Grand Valley, though, as they've only averaged .359. Will they be able to contain Maplewood's hitters?
Maplewood was able to grind out a solid victory over Grand Valley when the teams last played back in March, winning 6-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Rockets since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
