The Hanna Golden Eagles fought the good fight in their overtime contest against the Weslaco Panthers on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 65-62. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Hanna's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jordan Matamoros, who scored 27 points along with six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Beto Galarza, who scored 22 points along with five steals.
This is the second loss in a row for Hanna and nudges their season record down to 22-12. As for Weslaco, their victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-17.
Hanna will square off against the Raiders at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Rivera focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Friday. As for Weslaco, they will be playing at home against the Greyhounds at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. San Benito has now lost eight straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 15.
