The Wabasha-Kellogg Falcons will face off against the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Wabasha-Kellogg will aim to continue their five-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last.
Wabasha-Kellogg will bounce into Monday's contest after beating Chatfield, who they had gone 1-8 against in their nine prior meetings. The Falcons walked away with a 12-9 victory over the Gophers on Friday. Surprisingly, this marked the Falcons' fourth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.
Meanwhile, Kenyon-Wanamingo had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it five on Thursday. Everything went their way against the Panthers as they made off with an 11-3 win. The Knights might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by six runs or more this season.
Anna Ostertag made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits (and not a single walk). Those nine strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Vanessa Bartel, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. She also put up a double, which was her first of the season. Allina Mendoza was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double.
Wabasha-Kellogg is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.9 runs over those games. As for Kenyon-Wanamingo, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-3.
Everything went Wabasha-Kellogg's way against Kenyon-Wanamingo in their previous matchup back in May of 2015, as Wabasha-Kellogg made off with a 10-0 victory. Do the Falcons have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Knights turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
