It was a good run, but Lugoff-Elgin unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Monday. They had to suffer through a 62-27 loss at the hands of the Sumter Gamecocks. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Demons of the 103-51 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in January of 2024.
Lugoff-Elgin's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Mia Negron, who posted four points in addition to five boards and three steals, and Erin Manuel, who had no points along with 16 rebounds and three blocks. Manuel is becoming a predictor of Lugoff-Elgin's success: when she posts at least eight boards the team is undefeated (and 4-8 when she doesn't).
Sumter found their leader in freshman Araina Ross, who went 6 of 15 on her way to 18 points in addition to eight rebounds and six steals. Those six steals set a new season-high mark for Ross. The team also got some help courtesy of Kylie Myers, who went 7 of 10 on her way to 15 points.
Lugoff-Elgin's defeat dropped their record down to 8-8. As for Sumter, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season.
Lugoff-Elgin will host Blythewood at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Blythewood knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past five contests -- so hopefully Lugoff-Elgin likes a good challenge. As for Sumter, they will venture away from home to square off against West Florence at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
