The Gila Bend Gila Monsters will challenge the Sequoia Charter Stallions at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Gila Bend will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last.
Gila Bend is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They were the clear victors by a 28-4 margin over Berean Academy on Tuesday. The Gila Monsters have beaten the Eagles the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Eagles has come to flipping the script.
Nadiyah Martinez made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over three innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs but no hits. Martinez was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs.
In other batting news, Sierra Loper was a standout: she got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. Another player making a difference was Leila Martinez, who scored four runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Gila Bend always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .889. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Sequoia Charter was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They fell 8-5 to Thunderbird Adventist Academy.
Like Gila Bend, Sequoia Charter also got a great game from a two-way player: Naomi Sams. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. Sams was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.
In other batting news, Reyna Chavez was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.
Gila Bend pushed their record up to 3-3 with the win, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 21.3 runs over those games. As for Sequoia Charter, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-3.
