Dunedin and Canterbury are an even 3-3 against one another since April of 2018, but likely not for long. The Falcons will take on the Crusaders at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Dunedin is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Dunedin will roll into the contest after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Tuesday, then bounced right back against Lakewood on Thursday. The Falcons' pitcher stepped up to hand the Spartans a 17-0 shutout. The Falcons haven't had any issues with the Spartans recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.
Charlotte Fleeman made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of her three plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.
In other batting news, Lyla Griffey was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Jillian Ellison, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Canterbury lost 17-2 to Largo on Wednesday.
Canterbury saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lourdes Guzman, who went 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.
Dunedin's win bumped their record up to 15-5. As for Canterbury, they dropped their record down to 6-12 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Dunedin has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Canterbury struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Dunedin was able to grind out a solid victory over Canterbury in their previous meeting back in March of 2024, winning 5-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Falcons since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
