3A Western Slope recap September 10, 2013
Kellin Leigh of Rifle ran for the longest rushing play in 3A Western Slope this season against Moffat County last week. Leigh ran for 89 yards on the play and finished with 152 on the day as his team bested the Bulldogs.
Palisade scaled the state rankings by moving to 59 from 87 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Bulldogs climbed the ranks as a result of defeating Glenwood Springs 34-18.
Javier Nunez was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 166 yards on 7 carries as Rifle beat Summit.
McCannon was the best wideout in 3A Western Slope this week as the Sailors topped the Tigers. McCannon tallied 6 receptions for 162 yards. Billy Clark helped Steamboat Springs' passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 20 yards.
Jonathan Walck put up the best numbers in passing as Montezuma-Cortez topped Battle Mountain. He finished with 7 completions for 118 yards and 3 touchdowns. Walck's favorite target this week was Ryan Gurney, who caught 6 passes for 103 yards.
He was 7-14 with 2 interceptions.
6-foot-6 quarterback Cade Gafford of Delta is the league leader in passing yards this season with 336. He has also thrown 7 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is McCannon. The Steamboat Springs star has 10 catches for 255 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Palisade takes on the Panthers. Joe Romano's team is in second place, while Montezuma-Cortez is in fifth place.
Damon Wells' team took down Moffat County 62-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Nunez during the win.
