Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only The South Summit Wildcats walked away with it. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Layton Christian Academy on Saturday and snuck past 17-14. The win was nothing new for South Summit as they're now sitting on nine straight.
South Summit had a senior duo take command as Bracken Lassche threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns while completing 80% of his passes and Mitchell Gempeler picked up 182 receiving yards and a touchdown. Gempeler's longest reception was for an incredible 77 yards.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to South Summit's defense and their four sacks. Layton Christian Academy's QB won't forget Brady Freeman anytime soon given Freeman sacked him twice.
Despite the loss, Layton Christian Academy had strong showings from Trevor Halalilo, who rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown, and Marcus Miles, who rushed for 52 yards and a touchdown. Halalilo hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for four straight games.
South Summit's victory was their fifth straight at home , which pushed their record up to 10-2. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 37.4 points per game. As for Layton Christian Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-5.
South Summit will square off against San Juan at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. One thing working in San Juan's favor is that they have now posted big point totals every time they've taken the field this season. Layton Christian Academy does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
