Basketball Recap: Southmont Skates Past Covington with Ease

Southmont came tearing into Tuesday's match with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 27.3 points) and they left with even more momentum. They breezed by the Covington Trojans to the tune of 61-29. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Mounties also won the last time the pair played back in January of 2023.

Southmont's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kaylee Turner led the charge by putting up ten points and seven steals. Turner is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Ella Barry, who went 7 of 14 en route to 18 points and five boards.

Southmont was working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Covington only posted seven assists.

Despite the loss, Covington still got an impressive performance from Alex Sutherlin, who went 6 for 15 on her way to 17 points along with eight rebounds and six steals. That's the most steals Sutherlin has posted since back in November of 2024.

Southmont has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 9-10 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.3 points per game. As for Covington, their defeat was their ninth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 4-20.

Southmont didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 72-55 loss against Sheridan on the 29th. As for Covington, they will face off against Fountain Central at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Fountain Central's defense has only allowed 28.8 points per game this season, so Covington's offense will have their work cut out for them.
