After each having a week off, the Sulphur Bulldogs and the Perkins-Tryon Demons will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Sulphur will come into the game with an undefeated record on the line.
Sulphur is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup last Friday. They blew past Holland Hall 77-28. The Bulldogs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 contests by 20 points or more this season.
It was another big night for Maddax Mobly, who rushed for 149 yards and four scores on only 15 carries, and also picked up 79 receiving yards and one touchdown. Another player making a difference was Jojo Gray, who rushed for 163 yards and one TD on only 13 carries.
Sulphur's run defense was locked in: Holland Hall could only muster 2.2 yards per carry. The team can thank Kash Pickett for the heroic effort on defense: he. Sulphur didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 11.8.
Special teams also deserves some recognition, posting 15 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Bridge Barrett, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Meanwhile, in a tight matchup that could have gone either way, Perkins-Tryon made off with a 35-34 win over Cascia Hall.
Perkins-Tryon's win came from a few key players Sulphur will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Wyatt Atkinson, who rushed for 221 yards and one score while picking up 11.1 yards per carry. His rushing production has been exceptional for a while as that marked his tenth straight game with at least 101 rushing yards. Beau Gravitt was another key player, rushing for 119 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Perkins-Tryon's defensive line made their presence known, laying out the QB three times. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Atkinson, Ethan Anderson, and Travien Tillis, who each picked up one sack apiece.
Perkins-Tryon's victory bumped their record up to 9-3. As for Sulphur, their win bumped their record up to 12-0.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Sulphur has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 214.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Perkins-Tryon struggles in that department as they've been averaging 245 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Sulphur took their victory against Perkins-Tryon when the teams last played back in September by a conclusive 42-20 score. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Atkinson, who rushed for 218 yards and one TD. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will the Bulldogs still be able to contain Atkinson? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
