Basketball Recap: McGuffey Takes a Loss

It was fun while it lasted, but McGuffey's undefeated season came to an end after six games on Friday. They were outmatched by the Uniontown Red Raiders and fell 74-35. While losing is never fun, the Highlanders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 101st, while the Red Raiders are ranked ninth).

Uniontown's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tori Grooms, who went 9 for 16 on his way to 24 points in addition to five assists and four steals. The game was Grooms' sixth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Calvin Winfrey, who went 7 of 12 en route to 16 points along with six steals and five boards.

Having lost for the first time this season, McGuffey fell to 6-1. As for Uniontown, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-1.

McGuffey didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 50-37 win against St. John-Vianney on the 21st. As for Uniontown, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 70-67 loss against Mainland on the 21st.
