The United Longhorns will challenge the Alexander Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
As a matter of fact, United put up the most runs they have all season on Friday. They put the hurt on Laredo LBJ with a sharp 14-3 win. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Longhorns as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Tatiana Mejia made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. Mejia was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two triples, three RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Regina Rodriguez, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. That's the most runs she has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Katelynn Pompa, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI and one double.
United was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .531. They are 8-2 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, in Tuesday's Canine Competition, Alexander prevailed. They skirted past Laredo LBJ 12-11. The win was some much needed relief for the Bulldogs as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Like United, Alexander also got a great game from a two-way player: Deandra Martinez. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Martinez was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
In other batting news, Carmen Perez was incredible, going 3-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. She is also on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Andrea Cantu was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.
Alexander's victory bumped their record up to 9-18. As for United, their win bumped their record up to 9-19-1.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. United hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .313. However, it's not like Alexander struggles in that department as they've averaged .345. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
United suffered a grim 18-12 defeat to Alexander when the teams last played back in March. Can the Longhorns avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
