The Truckee Wolverines will square off against the Gridley Bulldogs at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams are strolling into their matches after big wins in their previous games.
Having struggled with seven defeats in a row, Truckee turned things around against Sparks on Wednesday. They were the clear victors by a 19-9 margin over the Railroaders. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Wolverines considering their two-run performance the contest before.
The team relied heavily on Gwen Burns, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Jessie Borzello, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs.
Meanwhile, Gridley came tearing into Wednesday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14.7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Tigers as they made off with a 13-2 win. The result was nothing new for the Bulldogs, who have now won 12 matches by six runs or more so far this season.
Reese Stevens was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. Stevens was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Avery Mendenhall was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Delanie Cloyd was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI.
Gridley kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in 11 consecutive contests.
Truckee's victory bumped their record up to 7-15. As for Gridley, their win bumped their record up to 12-4.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Truckee hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.4 home runs per game. However, it's not like Gridley struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 1.1 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Truckee might still be hurting after the 21-2 loss they got from Gridley in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Wolverines avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
