Basketball Recap: Leila Mathis' Big Game Can't Quite Lead George Walton Academy over Athens Christian

If George Walton Academy was feeling good fresh off their 62-40 takedown of Tattnall Square Academy last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The George Walton Academy Bulldogs took a hard 53-39 fall against the Athens Christian Eagles on Friday. The matchup marked the Bulldogs' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Several Bulldogs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Leila Mathis, who went 9 for 13 on her way to 22 points. That's the most points Mathis has posted since back in December of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashley Hill, who posted ten points and five rebounds.

George Walton Academy's defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 5-1 and their overall record down to 13-3. As for Athens Christian, their victory was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 17-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. George Walton Academy will challenge Tallulah Falls at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Athens Christian, they will take on Lakeview Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
