Flag Football Recap: Santa Margarita Find Success

While Santa Margarita's victory against Mater Dei wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Eagles had just enough and edged out the Monarchs 28-26. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Eagles have posted since October 8, 2024.

It was another big night for Madi Lam, who rushed for 100 yards and one TD on only ten carries, and also threw for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 80% of her passes. Those 100 rushing yards gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Gwen Julianel, who picked up 92 receiving yards and one score.

Santa Margarita didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Mater Dei to a completion percentage of just 42.9%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from three players: Lam, Avery Finneran, and Grace Manning, who each logged one passes deflected. Santa Margarita wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 69.7%.

Despite the defeat, Mater Dei saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Kendra Hansen rushed for 156 yards and one TD on only 13 carries, and also threw for 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Hansen's rushing production has been exceptional as that marked her sixth straight game with at least 102 rushing yards. Rachel Goran also helped with two scores in total.

Santa Margarita's victory bumped their record up to 19-6. As for Mater Dei, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-10 record this season.

Santa Margarita has already played their next game, a 28-2 loss against Orange Lutheran on the 14th. As for Mater Dei, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 25-0 defeat against JSerra Catholic on the 14th.
