III Section I recap Oct. 9, 2012
Williams Field extended the longest winning streak in III Section I this week by beating Apache Junction, 75-21. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Black Hawks.
Sabino took down Empire 65-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Lee Holland threw for 189 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
Byron Bourgogne made the biggest impact on defense this week as Higley lost to Queen Creek. The 5-foot-11 senior racked up 1.5 sacks.
Sunthi Danh was the best wideout in the league this week as the Sabercats beat the Ravens. Danh racked up four receptions for 127 yards. Matt Bushman helped Sabino's passing attack out by catching three balls for 62 yards.
Nick Elliott was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 25 carries, he ran for 201 yards as Casa Grande topped Empire. Ryder McIntyre also contributed to the rushing game with 64 yards on the ground.
Thanks to the talents of Carson Jones and Matt Guida the Bulldogs have been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Jones leads the league in passing with 1214 yards, while Guida has rushed for 1329 yards this season. Jay Campos' team's Bushman leads the league in receiving yards with 634 on 24 catches.
A big matchup in III Section I this week will be when Poston Butte takes on Queen Creek. The Broncos are in seventh place, while Joe Germaine's team is in fourth place.
Campo Verde made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 3,032 from 3,403. The improvement came about via a 26-14 victory over Tempe last week.
