After flying high against the Carson City-Crystal Eagles last Friday, the Merrill Vandals came back down to earth. Merrill took a 47-36 hit to the loss column at the hands of St. Charles on Wednesday. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Merrill in their matchups with St. Charles: they've now lost nine in a row.
Leading St. Charles to victory were Allison Zelinko and Emily Zelinko. Zelinko dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds, while Zelinko scored 15 points along with five assists and five rebounds. Zelinko is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Kendall Harger, who scored seven points along with five assists and three steals.
Merrill has been struggling recently, as they've lost six of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-7 record this season. As for St. Charles, the victory was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 9-1.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Merrill will challenge Ashley at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Ashley focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 last Monday. As for St. Charles, they will head out on the road to take on Vestaburg at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Vestaburg will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Michigan Rankings (they are ranked 422nd, while St. Charles is ranked 99th).
