Even though the Northern Patriots have not done well against the Huntingtown Hurricanes recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. Northern had just enough and edged Huntingtown out 57-54. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Northern.
Leading Northern to victory were Emmanuel Powell and Alec Johnson. Powell scored 17 points along with three steals, while Johnson dropped a double-double on 16 points and 13 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Powell scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Will Ellis, who scored 12 points along with four steals.
When it comes to explaining why Huntingtown lost, one person who can't be blamed is Nate Harris. Despite the final result, he scored 12 points along with five assists and three steals. Those three steals set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Roger Jones jr., who scored ten points along with five rebounds.
Even though they lost, Huntingtown were working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Northern only racked up six assists.
Northern's win bumped their record up to 3-1. As for Huntingtown, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-3.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Northern is on the road again on Friday and play against Archbishop Carroll at 6:30 p.m. on December 22, 2023. Archbishop Carroll presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Northern in their respective states (Archbishop Carroll is ranked 43rd in District of Columbia, while Northern is ranked 125th in Maryland). Huntingtown will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against Annapolis at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. Annapolis comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
