WPIAL A Eastern recap October 29, 2013
Adding to the longest winning streak in WPIAL A Eastern this week, North Catholic beat Leechburg 35-14. This was the team's ninth consecutive win.
Springdale moved up to 380 from 409 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Dynamos climbed the ranks as a result of besting Riverview 28-0.
Apollo Ridge's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Jesse Zelonka threw for 280 and 4 touchdowns and Tre Tipton had 144 yards receiving. On the ground Lonny Wells Jr contributed 78 yards. Alex Smith helped Apollo Ridge's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 79 yards.
Wells Jr was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 78 yards on 10 carries as the Vikings beat West Shamokin. Zelonka also contributed to the rushing game with 13 yards on the ground.
Leading WPIAL A Eastern in both passing and receiving yards, Apollo Ridge's Zelonka and Smith have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-0 quarterback Zelonka has thrown for 1,283 yards this season, while Smith has 25 catches for 497 yards. Keir Barber from the Raiders leads the league in rushing with 867 yards.
