Make it eight blowout wins for the North Mustangs this season. They breezed by Maryvale at home to the tune of 79-37. Given North's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 115th, while Maryvale is ranked 258th), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.
North got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Xxylina Flores out in front who scored 24 points along with six rebounds and five steals. Flores is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 13 games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Saniyah Downing, who scored 24 points along with eight rebounds and five assists.
Maryvale's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Dalia Valdez, who scored 11 points along with eight rebounds. Marianna Jennings was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with eight rebounds.
North's win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 10-8. As for Maryvale, their defeat was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 3-11.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. North will challenge Carl Hayden Community at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Carl Hayden Community is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'. As for Maryvale, they will head out on the road to challenge Alhambra at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
