Union Academy is on a four-game streak of home losses, the Knights a 20-game streak of away losses (dating back to last season), but someone's luck is about to change. The Union Academy Cardinals will take on the Gray Stone Day Knights at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Given that both teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
Union Academy pushed their score all the way to 61 on Tuesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell just short of North Stanly by a score of 63-61.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Aidan Scruitsky, who scored 20 points along with six rebounds and three steals. He has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. Miles Mcginnis was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with four steals.
Even though they lost, Union Academy were working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. This was only their 12th loss (out of 15 games) when they've passed the ball that well.
Meanwhile, Gray Stone Day took a serious blow against the Comets on Friday, falling 63-34. Gray Stone Day was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 35-15.
Like Gray Stone Day, they lost despite seeing results from several players. Drew Bitzer led the charge by scoring six points along with four steals. Another player making a difference was Evan Barber, who scored eight points along with two steals.
Union Academy has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-15 record this season. As for Gray Stone Day, their loss dropped their record down to 1-15.
Keep an eye on the arc in Tuesday's contest: Union Academy have been dynamite from deep this season, having made 38.5% of their threes per game. It's a different story for Gray Stone Day, though, as they've only made 25.8% of their threes this season. Given Union Academy's sizable advantage in that area, the Knights will need to find a way to close that gap.
Everything came up roses for Union Academy against the Knights when the teams last played back in January of 2023 as the team secured a 80-38 win. Does Union Academy have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Knights turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
