Jefferson County North (Winchester, Kan.) defeated
Olpe (Kan.) 51-40 on Saturday night to win the Class 2A girls basketball state championship in Manhattan, Kan.
Olpe had won 77 consecutive games and the previous two state titles. The Eagles' streak fell 14 short of the state record set by Little River (Kan.) in the late 1990's.
Olpe coach Jesse Nelson told the Wichita Eagle, "We haven't talked about the streak as a team this year, so there isn't a reason to bring it up now unless we talk about starting another one. They can fall on the 105 home-game winning streak that we're still riding, but all those streaks end somewhere. What a run it has been. It's been great. We lost four kids last year off of a (Class 1A) state championship team and to get back here was really something and being within 10 to 12 points."
The new champs led all the way, holding Olpe to 37 percent shooting from the field and 1-of-9 from 3-point range. Sisters Jacee (20 points) and Jordan (13 points) Kramer supplied the offense for the 25-1 champs.
