Marionville is 0-5 against Diamond since March of 2019 but things could change on Wednesday. The Comets will face off against the Wildcats at 5:00 p.m. Marionville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
While Marionville's win against Stockton wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Comets had just enough and edged out the Tigers 8-7 on Tuesday. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Comets as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Ashlin Carr spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and four unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up eight Ks.
At the plate, Annaliyah Ghan was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Maggie Murphy was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Marionville kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in March of 2024.
Meanwhile, Diamond faced Lockwood in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Wildcats blew past the Tigers 7-1. Considering the Wildcats have won eight games by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Lauren Turner was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI.
Turner wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Kenzie Crook, who went 2-for-3 with one run.
The win was the third in a row for Diamond, bringing their record up to 19-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Marionville, they now have a winning record of 10-9.
Marionville's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's contest. The Comets have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Diamond, though, as they've been averaging only 0.6 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Marionville continue to outrun the ball?
Marionville might still be hurting after the 8-1 defeat they got from Diamond in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Comets avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
