Softball Recap: Mt. Vernon Wins Going Away Against Zanesville

Mt. Vernon came out on top against Zanesville on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive nine-run fifth inning. The Yellowjackets blew past the Blue Devils 13-2. Considering the Yellowjackets have won eight contests by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Mt. Vernon got a massive performance out of Hailey Rudrick, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those two doubles gave Rudrick a new career-high. Brooke Dovenbarger was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Mt. Vernon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in 11 consecutive matchups.

Mt. Vernon's record now sits at 10-2. As for Zanesville, their defeat was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-10.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Mt. Vernon will take on rival Licking Valley at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Yellowjackets 2.6, the Panthers 2.9) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Zanesville is set to square off against their familiar foe Granville at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
