The Millington Central Trojans fought the good fight in their overtime match against the Munford Cougars on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Cougars by a score of 82-80. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Friday (63), Millington Central still had to take the loss.
Millington Central's loss came despite strong showings from Brandon Payne and Aiden Maclin. Payne scored 27 points along with seven rebounds and five assists, while Maclin dropped a double-double on 23 points and ten rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Maclin has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Tayshaun Dye, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds.
Munford's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jay Dancey led the charge by scoring 22 points along with seven assists and four steals. Dancey has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Elisha Patrick, who scored 20 points.
Millington Central has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last nine matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 11-12 record this season. As for Munford, the victory (which was their ninth in a row) raised their record to 16-2.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Millington Central will take on the Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Brighton is no doubt hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses. As for Munford, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against the Chargers at 7:30 p.m. Covington is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak.
