Basketball Game Preview: Progreso Red Ants vs. Lyford Bulldogs

The Progreso Red Ants will take on the Lyford Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Progreso comes in on four and Lyford on six.

On Tuesday, Progreso needed a bit of extra time to put away IDEA Riverview. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Rockets 38-36.

Julio Resendez was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 12 points and 17 boards. He has been hot, having posted ten or more boards the last eight times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Mathew Zuniga, who posted three points in addition to seven assists and seven boards.

Progreso smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 3.6 offensive rebounds per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 6.3.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Lyford). They simply couldn't be stopped on Tuesday as they easily beat IDEA Frontier College Prep 102-39. The Bulldogs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight matches by 20 points or more this season.

Lyford has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 14-7 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.3 points per game. As for Progreso, their win bumped their record up to 12-13.

Progreso might still be hurting after the 53-32 loss they got from Lyford in their previous matchup back in January of 2024. Can Progreso avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
