Baseball Recap: Charleston's Losing Streak Is a Thing of the Past

Charleston can bid farewell to their six-game losing streak thanks to their game on Friday. Everything went their way against the Shelbyville Rams as they made off with a 9-1 win. The Trojans have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Rams, too.

Phoenix Lofton looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Charleston is 2-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 0-5 otherwise.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Russell Applegate, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, five RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Luke Bonnstetter, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Charleston's victory bumped their record up to 2-6. As for Shelbyville, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 8-2.

Coming up, Charleston will head out on the road to take on Mt. Vernon at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Rams have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.3 runs per game on average), something the Trojans will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Shelbyville, they will be playing at home against Nokomis at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
