Black River and Columbia are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Pirates will be playing in front of their home fans against the Raiders at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. Black River is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.
Black River came out on top against Wellington on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive seven-run seventh inning. The Pirates were the clear victors by a 14-8 margin over the Dukes. The win continues a trend for the Pirates in their matchups with the Dukes: they've now won three in a row.
Christian Colegrove made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Colegrove was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-5 with three RBI and one stolen base. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.
In other batting news, Hunter Mate was incredible, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with four stolen bases and four runs. Another player making a difference was Zane Kristophel, who went 2-for-5 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, Columbia posted their closest victory since May 20, 2024 on Thursday. They skirted past Firelands 3-1. The three-run effort marked the Raiders' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
Like Black River, Columbia also got a great game from a two-way player: Carter Duley. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). Duley was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
Duley wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Justin Smith, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.
Columbia is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Black River, their victory bumped their record up to 4-2.
