The West Point Dragons are taking a road trip to take on the Apollo Hawks at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. West Point is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
West Point lost 12-6 to Mountain Ridge on Friday.
Marco Medina was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Javed Valencia, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Apollo ultimately got the result they hoped for on Thursday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 10-8 victory over Shadow Ridge.
Luis Valencia looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
On the hitting side, Roberto Quinonez was incredible, firing off two home runs and three runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. Those two home runs gave him a new career-high. Isaiah Holguin was another key player, going 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
Apollo lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Apollo pushed their record up to 17-6 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games. As for West Point, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-9.
Monday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. West Point has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .445. However, it's not like Apollo struggles in that department as they've averaged .454. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
West Point might still be hurting after the 13-5 loss they got from Apollo when the teams last played back in March. Can the Dragons avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
