Southern Connecticut Division I - West recap September 24, 2013
Bill Varney and Trevor Perry provided fans with a highlight when they connected against East Haven. The connection was good for 70 yards, the longest such play in Southern Connecticut Division I - West this season.
Michael Pingree of Shelton ran for the longest rushing play in the league this season against Guilford last week. Pingree ran for 67 yards on the play and finished with 67 on the day as his team beat the Indians.
Colton Smith was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 112 yards on 14 carries as Fairfield Prep bested the Yellowjackets. Teammate Joseph Ganim added to the ground attack by rushing for 92 yards.
Mark Piccirillo put up the best numbers through the air as Shelton beat Guilford. He finished with a total of 5 completions for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Perry was the best wideout in Southern Connecticut Division I - West this week as the Green Dragons bested East Haven. Perry tallied 2 receptions for 110 yards.
Smith provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Jesuits lost to St. Joseph. Smith's key target this week was Brendan Beiser, who caught 2 passes for 49 yards.
Thanks to the talents of Piccirillo and Jason Thompson, Jeff Roy's team has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Piccirillo is tops in the league in passing with 210 yards, while Thompson has rushed for 222 yards this season. Hamden's Perry leads the league in receiving yards with 125 on 4 catches.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Amity Regional takes on the Gaels. At the moment, the Spartans are in third, while Shelton is in first.
Amity Regional was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from fifth to third in the league. Earlier in the week, Bert Mozealous' team defeated Sheehan 48-13.
