Junior quarterback Rathen Ricedorff completed an Arizona state-record nine touchdown passes – to seven different receivers – in less than three quarters as Show Low blanked Chinle, 67-0.
The 5-foot-11, 150-pounder completed 19-of-25 overall for 273 yards with no interceptions. While leading the Cougars to a 4-0 record, Ricedorff has completed 50-of-76 passes for 880 yards and 20 touchdowns. They are ranked No. 2 in the state’s Class 3A poll.
Show Low is coached by Randy Ricedorff, who is Rathen’s father.
“At halftime, Rathen had seven touchdown passes," Randy Ricedorff said. "The kids came to me and said, ‘Coach, we want to make sure he breaks the record.’ It was tough to judge because I’m a father and a coach.
So, Rathen was left in to throw two more scoring passes, then exited – along with most of the other starters – about midway through the third quarter.
Not one to pour it on, Ricedorff noted that his son could have broken the state record during his first game as a sophomore, but he made the decision to pull him out.
“I’m extremely proud of my son,” he conceded. “He’s pretty mobile (runs a 4.6 40). He’s been playing for a long time. The game is starting to slow down (become easier) for him. He plays with a lot of confidence.”
