This season hasn't been kind to the Gilpin County Eagles, who are still winless after their ninth game. They were dealt a 75-36 defeat at the hands of Denver Academy on Thursday. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss Gilpin County has suffered yet this season.
Gilpin County's loss came despite strong showings from Lane Willis and Drew Starkey. Willis dropped a double-double on 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Starkey scored nine points along with two steals. That's the first time this season that Willis scored 15 or more points.
Even though they lost, Gilpin County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Denver Academy got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Nolan Monasch out in front who scored 30 points. That makes it six consecutive games in which Monasch has scored at least a third of Denver Academy's points. Luc Stanley was another key contributor, scoring 22 points.
Gilpin County's defeat was their 13th straight at home, which bumped their record down to 0-9. As for Denver Academy, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-2.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Gilpin County will challenge Clear Creek at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully Clear Creek focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 11 on Friday. Denver Academy won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Dayspring Christian Academy at 6:30 p.m. on January 19th. Hopefully Dayspring Christian Academy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 last Tuesday.
