The Palm Desert Aztecs waltzed into Friday's game with three straight wins but they left with four. They walked away with a 58-47 win over Calexico. Given Palm Desert's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 206th, while Calexico is ranked 936th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Coby Christensen was his usual excellent self, scoring 29 points. The game was his ninth in a row with at least ten points. Kamrynn Nathan was another key contributor, scoring 10 points.
Despite the loss, Calexico saw an underclassman step up: Dany Carreon scored 19 points. Carreon scored a full 40.4% of Calexico's points, the fifth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Carlo Monta?o, who scored 8 points.
Palm Desert has yet to lose a contest at home this season, leaving them with a 8-2 record. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.3 points per game. As for Calexico, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-4 record this season.
Palm Desert will face off against Riverside Prep at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Calexico, they will square off against Shadow Hills at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Shadow Hills focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up ten last Saturday.
