Baseball Recap: Grand County Finds Playoff Glory Versus Monticello

With a playoff win on the line, Grand County rose to the challenge on Saturday. They were the clear victors by an 18-1 margin over the Monticello Buckaroo. The Red Devils' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Breckin Shepherd made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Grand County is 5-1 when Shepherd posts two or more runs, but 7-11 otherwise.

In other batting news, Trace York and Tatym Bisco did most of the damage at the plate: York went 3-for-4 with two triples, four RBI, and two runs, while Bisco went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. That's the most hits Bisco has posted since back in May of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Romeo Williams, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs and one stolen base.

Grand County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .686. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Grand County is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-12 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.5 runs over those games. As for Monticello, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-9.

Coming up, Grand County will face off against San Juan at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Broncos are coming into the contest with ten straight victories on the road, so the Red Devils will have to stop a team with plenty of momentum. Monticello does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
