Chincoteague and Wicomico are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2017, but likely not for long. The Ponies will head out to square off against the Indians at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Chincoteague is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
Chincoteague lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Holly Grove Christian, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Tuesday's matchup. The Ponies blew past the Eagles 18-1 on Tuesday. The game was the first time the Ponies have beaten the Eagles on their field since April 25, 2016.
Kent Reed and Landon Easton were a major factor no matter where they played. On the mound, Reed tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Easton pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. At bat, Reed scored a run while going 2-for-5, while Easton scored four runs and stole two bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Garrett Daisy, who scored three runs and stole three bases while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Jermaine Logan Jr, who scored two runs while going 1-for-4.
Chincoteague kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Holly Grove Christian only managed nine hits.
Meanwhile, Wicomico was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their eighth straight defeat dating back to last season. They lost 10-2 to Bennett.
Wicomico saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Noah Riggin, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-4. That hit marked the first that Riggin got this season.
Chincoteague now has a winning record of 2-1-1. As for Wicomico, their loss dropped their record down to 0-6.
Chincoteague was able to grind out a solid win over Wicomico in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, winning 6-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Ponies since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
