Basketball Game Preview: Hanahan Hawks vs. Cathedral Academy Generals

Hanahan hasn't had much luck against Cathedral Academy recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Hanahan Hawks will wrap up 2024 with a road trip to face off against the Cathedral Academy Generals at 5:45 p.m. Cathedral Academy took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Hanahan, who comes in off a win.

Cathedral Academy is hoping to do what Georgetown couldn't on Tuesday: put an end to Hanahan's winning streak, which now stands at three games. Hanahan snuck past Georgetown with a 38-33 victory. Given the Hawks' advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 82nd, while the Bulldogs are ranked 208th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Hanahan can attribute much of their success to Camdyn Lawson, who posted 16 points and eight rebounds. That's the most boards Lawson has posted since back in November of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Bri Johnsen, who put up five points along with six boards and five assists.

Meanwhile, Cathedral Academy played a tough match on Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They had to suffer through a 63-22 loss at the hands of Palmetto Christian Academy. The Generals were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 46-13.

Despite the defeat, Cathedral Academy saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Raven Williams had 14 points.

Hanahan pushed their record up to 6-3 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 28.2 points per game. As for Cathedral Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 2-10.

Hanahan came up short against Cathedral Academy in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, falling 45-36. Can Hanahan avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
