Doral Academy has gone a perfect 3-0 against Archbishop McCarthy recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Firebirds are taking a road trip to square off against the Mavericks at 6:00 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Doral Academy 1.1, Archbishop McCarthy 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Doral Academy is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Florida's top teams: Wellington, who was ranked 18th at the time (Doral Academy was ranked first). The Firebirds sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 win over the Wolverines on Thursday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Firebirds have posted since April 25, 2024.
Meagan Villazon spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on two hits and racked up 13 Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Leyani Viruet, who went 1-for-2 with one home run. That home run was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Anabela Abdullah, who went 1-for-2 with one triple and one RBI.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Archbishop McCarthy ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They came out on top against Florida Christian by a score of 7-2. Winning may never get old, but the Mavericks sure are getting used to it with their sixth in a row.
Sienna Garcia made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out ten over eight innings pitched. Garcia was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
In other batting news, Ava Schneider was excellent, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March. Sophia Jimenez was another key player, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.
Doral Academy's win was their 22nd straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 21-1. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 9.4 runs this season. As for Archbishop McCarthy, their record now sits at 13-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Doral Academy has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 11.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Archbishop McCarthy struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Doral Academy's way against Archbishop McCarthy in their previous meeting back in February of 2021, as Doral Academy made off with a 13-2 win. Will the Firebirds repeat their success, or do the Mavericks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
