Woodrow Wilson is headed into Monday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fourth straight game on Saturday. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 12-10 heartbreaker at the hands of Riverside. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Maddex Sims put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off one hit. Sims was even better at the plate, scoring four runs and stealing two bases while going 4-for-4. He also hit two doubles, marking his first of the season.
In other batting news, Tyler Wilhite was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-4. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season. Brady Williams was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Even though they lost, Woodrow Wilson kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, James Monroe got themselves on the board against Summers County on Saturday, but Summers County never followed suit. They put the hurt on the Bobcats with a sharp 10-0 victory. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Mavericks' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.
Peyton Gardinier made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out eight over four innings pitched. Gardinier was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Cameron Crislip was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Baylee Ridgeway, who scored a run and stole a base.
Woodrow Wilson's defeat dropped their record down to 1-4. As for James Monroe, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.
Woodrow Wilson was able to grind out a solid victory over James Monroe in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, winning 7-2. Will Woodrow Wilson repeat their success, or does James Monroe has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
