For the first time in its last 25 regular season games, the Gilman boys lacrosse team walked off the field with a loss Friday afternoon.
Patrick Foster scored a game-high four goals, including two in the final 3:25, as Boys’ Latin upset conference rival Gilman, 13-12.
Gilman got off to a fast start and led 5-2 after the first quarter. But the Lakers outscored the Greyhounds 8-1 in the second to take a 10-6 lead into the half.
Gilman rallied to tie the game at 11 halfway through the fourth quarter, but Foster’s two goals gave the Lakers the lead for good.
Alex McBride and Marcus Holman each scored hat tricks for the Greyhounds.
“We’ve been fortunate to win some close games, and this time, we weren’t able to do it,” Gilman coach Brooks Matthews said. “I was proud of the heart and character and poise our players showed in the second half.”
Gilman (9-1) will try to rebound when it hosts Archbishop Spalding (7-6) on Tuesday afternoon. Spalding is coming off a 14-10 defeat at the hands of Calvert Hall (10-1).
“Now we know we have to work a bit harder to get better so we can do what we need to do in order to be successful in our next outing,” Matthews said. “As long as we learn the lessons, then the loss can be something that makes us better from here on out.”
Boys’ Latin (11-2) has a week to rest before trying to extend its winning streak to three when it hosts Loyola-Blakefield (7-4) on Friday afternoon.
More Lacrosse: Calvert Hall topples Spalding
Patrick Fanshaw had a game-high seven goals and dished out two assists in leading Calvert Hall to a 14-10 victory over Archbishop Spalding Friday afternoon.
Jason McFadden also scored four goals and tallied four assists as the Cardinals stayed undefeated in the powerful Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference with a 6-0 record (10-1 overall). Calvert Hall stands alone at the top of the conference standings following Gilman’s upset loss to Boys’ Latin.
Pat Harrison tallied a hat trick for Spalding (7-6, 2-4), which is trying to secure the sixth and final MIAA A Conference playoff spot. The Cavaliers will have their work cut out for them when they travel to Gilman (9-1) on Tuesday afternoon.
Calvert Hall will look to hold on to the top spot in the conference when the Cardinals head to St. Paul’s (11-4) for a Tuesday afternoon contest. St. Paul’s is coming off a 9-8 overtime win at Mount St. Joseph on Friday afternoon.
Baseball: Calvert Hall’s Geiger no-hits Loyola
Calvert Hall ace Blake Geiger struck out eight batters on his way to pitching a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Loyola.
It was the first career no-hitter for Geiger, who is 6-1 with a 1.88 ERA.
"I definitely had the confidence I would beat them," Geiger told the Baltimore Sun. "They beat us, 10-0, the last time we played. That was my motivation right there. We've never been beaten by 10 runs in maybe 20 or 30 years."
Loyola’s only base runners came on a walk and a hit batsman, and the Dons’ lack of offense foiled an otherwise solid pitching performance by Harry Slade, who allowed just five hits and two runs over five innings.
Calvert Hall was held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when back-to-back walks to Patrick Blair and Alex Lenovitz set-up what would eventually be the game-winning RBI for Matt Bosse when he singled to drive in both runners.
Calvert Hall (18-4, 11-2) remains in first place of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference, while Loyola fell to 13-6, 8-5.
More Baseball: Hammond shuts out Atholton on the diamond
Third baseman Travis Clark hit a three-run home run in the first inning for what would prove to be the game-winning hit as Hammond cruised to a 10-0 rout of Atholton on Friday afternoon.
Hammond’s ace pitcher Danny Wissman overcame hitting four batters and two bases-loaded situations to notch the win. Atholton managed just three hits against Wissman.
The mercy rule was implemented after five innings when Joey Logan singled in the 10th run of the game to notch the win for Hammond (9-1, 8-1 Howard County).
Atholton fell to 9-3 overall, 8-3 in the county.
Girls Lacrosse: St. Mary’s routs Spalding
Joanna Dalton scored a game-high six goals, and Chelsea Rowe added a hat trick as St. Mary’s rolled to a decisive 18-4 victory over Archbishop Spalding.
The win was the fourth straight for the Saints (7-3), while Spalding’s loss was its eighth straight after starting the season 7-0. Spalding has been playing without star goalie Cosette Larash, who suffered a knee injury on March 17 and is out for the season.
Julie Schindel also contributed two goals and four assists for the Saints, including a nifty pass on Melissa Perkins’ goal just as time expired in the first half to give the Saints the momentum and an 8-3 halftime lead.
St. Mary’s outscored Spalding 10-1 in the second half.
St. Mary’s will look to extend its winning streak to five when it hosts Seton Keough (1-11) on Tuesday afternoon.
Spalding (8-8) rebounded for a 13-10 win over Severna Park (7-3) on Saturday and will look to string two wins together when they host Maryvale Prep (7-4) on Tuesday.
