The Morenci Wildcats's game last Thursday was a tough loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Friday. They came out on top against Tombstone by a score of 54-44. That's another feather in the cap for Morenci, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Morenci can attribute much of their success to Elena Leonard, who scored 26 points along with seven steals. Leonard has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last 15 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Rozlyn Funari, who scored ten points along with six rebounds and six steals.
Rachel Thursby and Briella Schuller certainly did their best on Friday to try and avoid the loss. Thursby scored 18 points, while Schuller scored 18 points. That's the first time this season that Schuller scored 15 or more points.
Morenci's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-9. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.0 points per game. As for Tombstone, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 10-10.
Morenci will head out on the road to square off against Willcox at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Willcox is coming into the match hot, having won their last three games. As for Tombstone, they will look to defend their home court on Monday against Empire at 5:30 p.m. Empire comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 25 points in their last six games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
