Even though the Hunter Wolverines have not done well against the Kearns Cougars recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. Hunter greeted the New Year with with a 64-48 win over Kearns. The high flying offensive effort was a huge turnaround for Hunter considering their one-point performance the game before.
Leading Hunter to victory were Zaquel Cossa and Dominick Phannolath. Cossa scored 18 points along with seven rebounds, while Phannolath scored 17 points along with six assists and six rebounds. That makes it seven consecutive games in which Phannolath has scored at least 25% of Hunter's points. Another player making a difference was Keaton Miller, who scored six points along with three steals.
Kearns' loss came despite strong showings from Anywan Kuang and Darin Detvongsa. Kuang scored 20 points along with six rebounds, while Detvongsa scored 12 points. The matchup was Kuang's sixth in a row with at least ten points. Kayden Stark was another key contributor, scoring two points.
Hunter now has a winning record of 6-5. As for Kearns, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-9.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hunter will challenge Mountain Crest at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Mountain Crest is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 57.6 points per game. As for Kearns, they will head out on the road to face off against Granger at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Granger is on a five-game streak of home losses, Kearns a five-game streak of away losses (dating back to last season), but someone's luck is about to change.
