Princeton hasn't had much luck against Shady Spring recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. Princeton will face off against Shady Spring at 5:30 p.m. Princeton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.1 runs per game this season.
Princeton is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: PikeView, who was ranked 12th at the time (Princeton was ranked 25th). The Tigers fell 9-4 to the Panthers on Monday.
Deegan Walters and Brody Combs stepped up to the plate in a big way. Walters went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double, while Combs went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Shady Spring, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Saturday. They put the hurt on Nicholas County with a sharp 11-0 victory on Monday. The Tigers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by six runs or more this season.
Tyler Wilhite was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Shady Spring let Sam Barnett and Cutter Boggs run wild. Barnett went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Boggs went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Jacob Claypool was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Shady Spring has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.2 runs over those games. As for Princeton, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Princeton has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Shady Spring struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4.6 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
