Basketball Recap: Cherokee Trail Comes Up Short in High-Profile Game with Cherry Creek

On Friday, Cherokee Trail faced Cherry Creek in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Cherokee Trail Cougars were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 49-48 to the Cherry Creek Bruins. The Cougars were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bruins apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Cherokee Trail's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Delainey Miller, who almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine boards. The dominant performance also gave Miller a new career-high in assists (six). Another player making a difference was Aaliyah Broadus, who posted seven points and seven rebounds.

Cherry Creek got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Braelynn Barnett out in front who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine boards. Barnett is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of London Taylor, who earned 13 points.

Cherokee Trail's defeat dropped their record down to 10-7. As for Cherry Creek, the victory was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 12-5.

Cherokee Trail will square off against Eaglecrest at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (Cherokee Trail has won nine straight at home dating back to last season, while Eaglecrest won three straight on the road), something that'll have to change. As for Cherry Creek, they will face off against Mullen at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Cherry Creek is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 60.9 points per game this season.
