Scott Meredith of
Hargrave Military Academy (Chatham, Va.) hit 18 3-pointers and finished with 55 points Wednesday night in a 131-80 win over Combine International of Charlotte.
"He was just on fire," Hargrave head coach A.W. Hamilton said. "He hit three or four in a row to start and I told our guys we were going to ride this thing until he cools down. He really never did."
Meredith, a 5-foot-11 combo guard originally from North Carolina, attempted 31 shots from beyond the arc and connected on his only free throw attempt of the game. Hamilton is hoping the performance will help stir up some attention for the unsigned senior.
"He's not going to wow you or go out there and dunk but the more you are around him the more you fall in love with him," Hamilton said. "The kid has a 5.0 GPA and he’s never made a B in his life. He’s fun to be around, just a special person."
Hargrave Military Academy is 29-5 this season and has topped the 100-point mark 16 times.
The program is a pipeline to Division I basketball. This year's roster includes Justin Goode (headed to Rutgers), Trey Grundy (UNC-Wilmington), Kejuan Johnson (Rutgers), Danjel Purifoy (Auburn) and Tyrone Taylor (Wichita State).
Hamilton credited that group for some of Meredith's success, noting that Hargrave totaled 35 assists in the victory.
"Those guys took a backseat and they found him," Hamilton said.
Louisville All-American candidate Montrezl Harrell is among Hargrave's most prominent recent alums. Jordan Crawford, Josh Howard and David West have also played for the program in the past.
